Romanian President Nicușor Dan accused Russia of escalating attacks on NATO's eastern flank following a drone strike that sank a cargo ship off the country's Black Sea coast. The incident resulted in the death of at least one sailor, while three other crew members remained missing as emergency and rescue teams searched rough seas.

The vessel, identified as the Comoros-flagged cargo ship Khoryv, had sent a distress signal from a position approximately 13 nautical miles off the coast of Constanța. Reports indicate that the ship was carrying a mixed crew of Ukrainian and Azeri sailors, with rescue operations managing to pull survivors from the water.

Regional authorities noted that the incident marks a continuation of a recent rise in attacks on commercial shipping in the vicinity of Romania and Bulgaria. Over a two-week span, multiple cargo vessels have reportedly been struck, heightening safety and security concerns for commercial traffic operating throughout the Black Sea region.

In response to the growing security threats, regional nations have called for enhanced protection measures for commercial shipping lanes. Concurrently, NATO announced plans to step up its regional surveillance by deploying additional maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, and drones to the Black Sea area.
