Authorities in the 1United Arab Emirates (UAE) have closed beaches in several northern emirates following an offshore oil leak from a tanker. Ras Al Khaimah announced on October 24 that all its beaches would remain closed until further notice, following similar measures in Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah.

The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said containment operations were underway and an environmental assessment was being conducted. Beaches and coastal areas in Umm Al Quwain were temporarily closed while technical teams assessed the situation and identified the necessary safety and marine protection measures.

Authorities also urged fishermen and other sea users to avoid affected areas and follow official safety instructions. Residents in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain reported unusual and strong odors, although the environment ministry said these did not pose a health risk. Officials have yet to identify the tanker involved or confirm the cause of the leak.

The incident has raised concerns about the potential effects of oil pollution on marine ecosystems and coastal communities. It also comes amid heightened maritime security risks in Gulf shipping lanes following attacks on commercial vessels linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Authorities continue to assess the situation as efforts to contain the leak and limit its environmental impact proceed.
