The Port of Los Angeles recorded its busiest three-month cargo period in history after handling more than 2.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from June through August 2026, supported by continued U.S. import demand and early movement of holiday merchandise.

The port processed 955,907 TEUs in August, about the same level as a year earlier but 6% above its five-year average for the month. Loaded imports reached 500,302 TEUs, while loaded exports totaled 115,561 TEUs, down 9% from August 2025. Empty container movements reached 340,044 TEUs.

Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka attributed the strong summer performance to resilient consumer demand, early holiday shipments and a broad mix of cargo. He said September is also expected to be a strong month as businesses continue adjusting their shipping decisions to changing global trade conditions.

During the first eight months of 2026, the Port of Los Angeles handled just over 7 million TEUs, 1.5% higher than the same period last year. U.S. import volumes have remained stronger than previously expected, although forecasts indicate that container imports could ease later in the year following the extended peak shipping season.
