U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that he expects the war with Iran to end “very soon,” predicting that the conflict could conclude shortly after the U.S. midterm elections in November.

Speaking to reporters in Dublin, Trump said he believes Iran is trying to prolong the conflict until after the elections. He also predicted that global oil prices would fall once the fighting ends. The remarks remain a forecast by the U.S. president, and no agreement ending the conflict has been announced.

Trump also repeated his claim that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route for global oil and gas supplies. Commercial traffic through the waterway has remained disrupted during the conflict, although U.S.-facilitated vessel transits have allowed some energy shipments to continue.

His comments came after a drone attack forced Saudi Arabia to temporarily shut its East-West oil pipeline, an important route that allows crude exports to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi authorities said the pipeline was closed as a precaution while damage from the attack was assessed.
