Hanwha Group is seeking a larger role in U.S. naval shipbuilding through its Philadelphia shipyard, including possible work on Navy vessels and ship components. The South Korean group said it intends to support efforts to increase American shipbuilding capacity.

Hanwha completed its $100-million acquisition of the shipyard in December 2024. The company later announced plans to invest $5 billion in the facility, expand its workforce, install new production equipment, and substantially increase annual vessel output.

The Philadelphia facility has primarily built commercial vessels and training ships for the U.S. Maritime Administration. Hanwha has also entered the U.S. Navy supply chain through design and subcontracting work connected to planned naval support vessels.

Any direct construction of U.S. Navy warships at the yard would remain subject to federal procurement rules, security requirements, and government approval. Hanwha has not announced a confirmed contract for the Philadelphia facility to build a Navy combat vessel.
