U.S. forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers on September 8 after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over the previous two days, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

CENTCOM identified the vessels as M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco, which were targeted in the Gulf of Oman, and M/T Derya, which was struck near Iran’s Kharg Island. U.S. forces instructed the crews to abandon the tankers before the strikes, after which the vessels were rendered inoperable, CENTCOM said.

The U.S. military said the targeted Navy warship successfully evaded the two alleged Iranian missile attacks and continued patrolling regional waters. CENTCOM reported that no American personnel were injured. It also accused Iran of using the tankers as part of a multibillion-dollar network that provides funding to the IRGC and affiliated groups in the region.

The September 8 strikes followed a similar U.S. operation on September 5, when CENTCOM said American forces destroyed three other Iranian crude oil tankers after the IRGC allegedly attempted to attack a U.S. aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. The latest attacks come amid continued military tensions affecting shipping and maritime security in waters surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
