President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. attended the Philippine Maritime Convention 2026 (PhilMarCon 2026) on September 23 at The Manila Hotel, bringing together government leaders, maritime industry representatives, labor organizations, academic institutions, international partners, and other stakeholders to discuss the direction and priorities of the Philippine maritime sector. The President’s participation highlighted the government’s continuing engagement with the maritime community and recognition of the vital role of Filipino seafarers in the global shipping industry.

With the theme “Sailing Forward: The Philippines as the Global Leader in Seafarers’ Welfare, Protection and Maritime Excellence,” the two-day convention provided a venue for discussions on maritime governance, seafarer welfare and protection, education and training, workforce development, and cooperation among different sectors. The event followed previous Philippine maritime conventions and served as a platform for reviewing current challenges, sharing industry perspectives, and identifying areas where government, employers, labor groups, training institutions, and international organizations can work together.

In his message during the event, President Marcos recognized the contribution of Filipino seafarers who continue to serve aboard vessels around the world. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the country’s position as a major source of competent maritime professionals while ensuring that systems supporting seafarers keep pace with developments in the global maritime industry. The President also discussed the need to strengthen measures related to welfare protection, employment standards, skills development, and responses to emerging concerns affecting international shipping operations.

The President further cited government efforts connected to the implementation of the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, along with programs focused on employment protection, welfare assistance, reintegration, and compliance with international maritime requirements. PhilMarCon 2026 concluded with continued discussions among stakeholders on strengthening cooperation and developing policies that address the needs of Filipino maritime professionals. The convention reflected a shared commitment among government agencies, industry partners, labor representatives, and maritime institutions to support the welfare, protection, and professional growth of Filipino seafarers while contributing to the continued development of the Philippine maritime sector.
