The United States has lifted longstanding security restrictions on vessels arriving in U.S. waters after calling at Nigerian ports, ending measures that had been in place since 2014.
The restrictions, known as Conditions of Entry, required certain vessels that had recently called at Nigerian ports to implement additional security measures before entering U.S. waters. The requirements were introduced following concerns over maritime and port security standards in Nigeria.

The decision follows efforts by Nigerian maritime authorities and industry stakeholders to strengthen port security and improve compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. U.S. Coast Guard teams have also conducted assessments of Nigeria’s maritime security framework and port facilities over the years.
Nigerian authorities have worked with port and terminal operators, shipping companies, and other maritime stakeholders to address identified security concerns and strengthen security measures at the country’s ports.

The lifting of the restrictions is expected to reduce additional security procedures for affected vessels trading between Nigeria and the United States. It may also help streamline vessel operations and reduce some compliance-related costs associated with the previous requirements.
The development marks a significant change for Nigeria’s maritime sector after more than a decade of additional U.S. security requirements. Vessels and port facilities will, however, remain subject to applicable national and international maritime security regulations.
