Saudi Arabia’s tanker operations are facing growing logistical challenges following the Houthis’ declaration of a maritime blockade targeting vessels calling at Saudi ports. The development has prompted several shipowners and operators to reassess voyage plans, with some tankers altering routes to reduce security risks in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

According to shipping reports, a number of tankers carrying Saudi crude and petroleum products have diverted from their original routes, with some choosing the Suez Canal or longer passages around the Cape of Good Hope. These adjustments are expected to increase voyage durations, operating costs, and fuel consumption while complicating tanker scheduling and fleet management

Industry analysts noted that the blockade adds further uncertainty to global energy transportation at a time when regional tensions remain elevated. The evolving security situation has also affected the marine insurance market, with some war-risk insurers tightening coverage requirements for vessels linked to Saudi ports. Higher insurance premiums and stricter underwriting standards may increase the cost of transporting cargoes through the region.

Maritime stakeholders continue to monitor developments as governments, shipowners, and security organizations assess the impact of the blockade on regional trade and global energy supply chains. While commercial shipping through the Red Sea continues, operators are expected to remain cautious as the situation evolves.
