Iran Assures Safe Passage for Filipino Seafarers as Tensions Persist in Hormuz

MANILA, April 2, 2026 — The Philippine government confirmed that Iran has assured the safe passage of Filipino seafarers, Philippine-flagged vessels, and energy shipments transiting the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing security concerns in the region. The assurance came following a phone call between Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

During the discussion, Iran committed to allow safe, unhindered, and fast transit for Philippine-linked vessels passing through the strategic waterway. The Department of Foreign Affairs stated, “Iran will allow the safe, unhindered, and expeditious passage through the Strait of Hormuz of Philippine-flagged vessels, energy sources, and all Filipino seafarers.”

The development comes at a time when tensions in the Strait of Hormuz remain high, with continued reports of military presence and strict monitoring of vessels entering and exiting the area. Shipping companies and crews are still on alert due to possible risks, including delays, inspections, and sudden changes in the security situation.

Filipino seafarers onboard vessels operating in the Middle East continue to face pressure as they navigate one of the world’s most critical and sensitive shipping routes. Some ships are required to coordinate closely with authorities before transit, while others remain cautious due to the unstable environment in nearby waters.

ADVERTISMENT

The Philippines relies heavily on energy imports passing through the Strait of Hormuz, making the situation a key concern for both maritime operations and national energy supply. Despite Iran’s assurance, the risk in the area remains, as the broader conflict continues to affect vessel movements and overall safety in the region.
