Tanker Grounds in Shallow Waters Off Oriental Mindoro; No Injuries Reported

A domestic oil tanker ran aground in shallow coastal waters off Oriental Mindoro after encountering adverse weather conditions, prompting an immediate response from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). Authorities confirmed that all crew members are safe as efforts continue to refloat the vessel and prevent any environmental impact.

The tanker was reportedly navigating along its scheduled route when deteriorating sea conditions forced it to seek safer waters closer to shore. During the maneuver, the vessel became stranded on a shallow seabed several hundred meters from the coastline.

Coast Guard personnel were dispatched to the scene to assess the situation and verify the safety of the crew. Initial inspections indicated that the vessel remained stable and upright, with no immediate signs of hull breach or fuel leakage. As a precaution, oil spill containment measures were readied to mitigate potential risks.

ADVERTISMENT

Maritime authorities have coordinated with the vessel’s owner to deploy tugboats and technical teams to assist in refloating operations. Officials emphasized that weather and tidal conditions will play a key role in safely freeing the tanker without causing structural damage.

The Maritime Industry Authority has been informed of the grounding and is expected to conduct further evaluation of the vessel’s seaworthiness once it is moved to deeper waters. Authorities also signaled that an investigation will be undertaken to determine the precise circumstances that led to the incident.

While no pollution has been reported, officials underscored the importance of vigilance, particularly in coastal provinces where environmental sensitivity and fishing communities heighten the stakes of maritime accidents. The incident highlights the challenges vessels face when navigating Philippine waters during sudden shifts in weather conditions.
