MARINA Conducts Heightened Vessel Inspections in Zamboanga Region

ZAMBOANGA REGION — The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has started intensified inspections of vessels operating in the Zamboanga Peninsula and Sulu on February 2, 2026, following the directive of MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan.

On the first day of the operation, three vessels were thoroughly inspected by MARINA Regional Office IX (MRO IX), including two roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels and one passenger vessel. MARINA said the compliance inspections will continue until all operating vessels in the area have been checked.

The inspections are being conducted in line with MRO IX Advisory No. 2026-003. Inspection teams are checking the proper securing of cargo, the availability and condition of safety equipment, fire protection and firefighting systems, navigational equipment, as well as the vessels’ engines and machinery.

MARINA emphasized that vessels found with deficiencies or violations may face suspension of operations and other penalties in accordance with existing regulations.

The agency added that continuous monitoring will be carried out to ensure the safety of passengers, crew members, and other stakeholders in maritime transport. Vessel operators are also encouraged to fully cooperate and strictly comply with all safety requirements.
