The ro-ro cargo vessel FINNWAVE encountered an engine-room fire while navigating the English Channel, resulting in a complete loss of propulsion and a temporary drift in one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.
Initial reports indicate that the incident occurred while the vessel was sailing from Rosslare Harbour, Ireland, to Zeebrugge, Belgium. The crew promptly activated emergency fire-fighting procedures and succeeded in extinguishing the blaze. However, all attempts to restore engine power were unsuccessful, leaving the vessel without propulsion.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Eastbourne lifeboat responded to the distress call and maintained position nearby as the crew deployed the ship’s anchor to prevent further drift amid moderate sea conditions. No injuries were reported, and no evacuation was deemed necessary.
UK maritime authorities continue to monitor the FINNWAVE and are coordinating the next steps, including technical assessment and potential towage arrangements. The incident underscores the operational risks associated with engine-room fires on ro-ro vessels, particularly in heavy-traffic areas such as the English Channel.
