The Inclusion Advantage - enhancing crew safety, culture and performance on board
Today’s workshop on Shangri-la The Fort emphasized how embracing diversity and practicing inclusion can strengthen teamwork, safety, and overall performance across the different companies invited by the Mission to Seafarers. We learned about key inclusive traits such as learning from experience, leading by example, being curious, generous, and courageous, all essential in building a positive and respectful shipboard environment.
An interactive activity asked, “If someone asked you to describe what inclusion means to you, what words would you use?†The responses highlighted powerful themes like communication, team, family, belonging, respect, and trust, reflecting how inclusion helps every seafarer feel valued, connected, and empowered.
We also identified enablers of inclusivity, including open communication, empathy, and collaboration, as well as blockers like bias and lack of awareness. The session served as a meaningful reminder that inclusion is a continuous effort, one that strengthens safety culture, teamwork, and unity across all vessels.
