A tragic accident occurred at a shipyard in Istanbul’s Tuzla district when the ro-ro cargo vessel Elmes suddenly tipped over during maintenance operations. The incident, which took place on October 9, resulted in the deaths of two workers and left several others injured.

The 101-meter-long vessel, registered under the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis, was undergoing routine repairs at Yıldız Shipyard when it lost stability and rolled onto its port side. At the time of the accident, several workers were on board conducting maintenance work. The sudden tilt caused heavy equipment and steel components to shift, leading to multiple casualties and damage to the surrounding dock area.

Rescue teams, including the Turkish Coast Guard, firefighters, and medical responders, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Two Ukrainian nationals were confirmed dead, while at least four others sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Divers were also deployed to ensure no individuals remained trapped beneath the vessel.
