Promoting Welfare and Legal Awareness Among Seafarers
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) successfully conducted the “Bayanihan para sa Bagong Marino†orientation seminar, a key initiative aimed at equipping Filipino seafarers with essential knowledge of their rights, welfare, and protections under the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers.
Addressing Shipboard and Welfare Concerns
The seminar served as an informative platform to raise awareness on vital issues affecting the maritime workforce, including shipboard conditions, certification and training requirements, dispute resolution mechanisms, and measures to prevent harassment and bullying at sea. Through these discussions, the program sought to empower both aspiring and active seafarers to navigate their careers with confidence and legal awareness.
Government Leaders and Experts Share Insights
Distinguished speakers shared their expertise on various aspects of maritime labor and welfare: Assistant Secretaries Jerome Pampolina and Joyce Malana, Atty. Zhenyery Terrazola of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and NLRC Commissioner Leonard Vito Ignacio. Their sessions emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to uphold decent work, fair treatment, and safe working conditions for all Filipino seafarers.
Recognizing Commitment and Collaboration
The event concluded with the awarding of certificates and closing remarks from DMW Undersecretary Felicitas Bay, who reaffirmed the department’s dedication to ensuring that every seafarer receives proper guidance and protection throughout their deployment journey. Also in attendance were Director Ogie San Diego III and members of the DMW staff, representing the department’s united support for the maritime community.
